May 9th - Victory Day is celebrated at Baku city Main Police Department

On May 9, an event dedicated to the 74th anniversary of the Victory in the war against fascism in 1941-1945 was held at Baku city Main Police Department.

Deputy Chief of the Baku City Main Police Department on operation works, Police Major-General Elkhan Hasanov opened the event and stated that the Azerbaijani people, who played a big role in the victory earned, sent more than 600 thousand sons and daughters to the battle-front and about half of them did not return from the battlefields. More than 130 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, more than 170 thousand soldiers and officers were awarded with various orders - medals for their bravery. All these facts once again demonstrate the steadfastness and militancy of our people.

At the suggestion of the Deputy Chief, the memory of those killed in the Second World War, as well as in the battles for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, was commemorated with a minute of silence. 

Later Senior Assistant of the Chief of the Main Department on work with personal staff, Police Colonel Ali Valiyev made a detailed report.

It was pointed out that Azerbaijan hold a special place in the occupation plans of fascist Germany. Azerbaijan’s wealth, favourable strategic-geographical position between the West and the East attracted the attention of the Nazis. The German government had great hopes for invading the whole East by using the oil of Baku. 

Approximately 800 employees of the internal affairs bodies fought among our compatriots participating in the war in those years. Among them, Major-General Khalil Mammadov, Major-General Salahadin Kazimov and Colonel Mehdi Guliyev were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

At the end of the event, Police Major-General Elkhan Hasanov highlighted that because the great leader Heydar Aliyev held high the justice, the moral rights of the participants of the war in 1941-1945 were returned to them and May 9 has been celebrating as Victory Day in Azerbaijan since 1994. The memorable courage of the heroic sons of Azerbaijan who participated in glorious battles is an example of true patriotism for the younger generation.

It should be noted that within the framework of the event, a meeting was held with veterans who participated in glorious battles and served in internal affairs bodies after the war.

Honorary member of Veterans Council of Baku city MPD, retired Police Colonel Ismayil Gasimov was visited at his home. In the meeting, Police Colonel Ali Valiyev pointed out that Azerbaijan had made a significant contribution to the historic Victory over fascism. Ismayil Gasimov, who welcomed the guests in the police dress uniform, expressed his gratitude for the care and attention shown to him.

Later on Ali Valiyev, Chief of Veterans Council of Baku city MPD retired Police Lieutenant-Colonel Emin Mammadov met with other veterans and spoke about the historic courage of the Azerbaijani children in the Second World War.

Veterans expressed their gratitude to the head of state Ilham Aliyev for paying special attention to their problems, approaching them with care, taking important steps in the direction of solution of their social issues.

Later on veterans were presented money rewards.
